فن شعر (poetics) که پیش از این به معنای مطالعه ی شعر و شیوه های آن بود در قرن بیستم در مفهوم گسترده به نظریه ی ادبی و مشخصه هایی که سبب پیدایش ادبیات است، اطلاق می شود. نوگرایی (modernism) بیش از آنکه از نقطه نظر زمانی دارای اهمیت باشد، گویای زمینه های فکری و اجتماعی است که تحولاتی بنیادین را در هنر و ادبیات رقم زد. تی. اس. الیوت، تی. ئی. هولم و ازرا پاوند از مهمترین نظریه پردازان نوگرایی هستند که اصول و ساختارهای شعر نوگرا را به وجود آوردند. قرن بیستم دربرگیرنده ی تنوعی بی سابقه در موضوعات شعری است، با این حال چنین به نظر می رسد که اظهار نظر در رابطه با شعر و ادبیات جذبه های فراوانی برای شاعران نوگرا داشته است. چه به صراحت در عنوان شعر و یا با اشارات ضمنی، گفتگویی بی وقفه در پیکره ی اشعار نوگرا جریان دارد که نمودی از دغدغه ی بزرگ شاعران در مورد چیستی شعر و ادبیات است و جایگاه زیبایی شناختی آنها را مشخص می کند. پژوهش حاضر به بررسی بازتاب عملی فن شعر در اشعار پنج شاعر نوگرا (آرچیبالد مک لیش، بیلی کالینز، والاس استیونس، ویلیام کارلوس ویلیامز و ویلیام باتلر ییتز) می پردازد.
